Projects & Developments
Pier & Park Revitalization
The Waterfront Enhancement Project is currently underway and it's making some exciting changes to the city's bottomlands which once housed a United States Coast Guard Station.
The project will create vehicle access and parking to a newly constructed 540' pier jetting out into Lake Huron. Another project is set to restore two old Coast Guard structures, one being a garage and the other a cupola off the top of the old Coast Guard Station. The garage will serve as a museum, class room, and meeting place. The projects will open an entire new area for recreational activity and natural resource access such as lake access below the surface, bird watching, fishing, kayak and boating, and scuba diving in the harbor and further out in the lake.
Trail System Expansion
Harbor Beach has a number of bike-pedestrian paths, with more set to be built in the coming months and years. Harbor View Trail, pictured above, is a two-mile long trail connecting the campground, marina, beach, and the community's business district, and is set to encompass even more of the area's harbor, including the new Waterfront Enhancement Project, in the city's next phase of trail expansions.
Shoreline Revitalization
The city of Harbor Beach has been committed to rehabilitating the shoreline and its adjacent properties to better suit the community and its visitors. In addition the Waterfront Enhancement Project and trail expansion, the city is invested in cleaning up wooded lots, trimming trees and improving the overall appearance of the shoreline.
Coal Plant Decommission
-UPDATE- The structures are down!
The Detroit Edison coal plant was shuttered in favor of renewable energy sources in the area. The process of demolition and cleanup has begun and will be completed in the coming years, freeing up a large section of lakefront property for new uses.
